📰 NEWSLETTER ISSUE #004

From 35° scorchers to sweater mornings in the span of five days - welcome to Niagara’s Labour Day long-weekend shuffle.

Happy Friday, neighbour!

Yes, you’re reading this on Friday night.

We usually knock on your inbox Thursday mornings - but sometimes life piles up like Costco carts. Thanks for hanging in; Niagara doesn’t stop just because we’re a day (and a half) late.

Labour Day is in full swing, and if you’re still plotting what to do between now and Monday, you’ve got options. From heritage pies in Wainfleet to salsa on the canal, a parade through St. Catharines, and one secretly “life-altering” plate of venison, Niagara’s last summer hurrah isn’t slowing down yet.

Here’s what’s cooking around town this week:

  • A heritage home in Port Colborne that couldn’t be saved.

  • A $25M flying theatre giving the Falls a whole new perspective.

  • A St. Catharines runner on a quest to cover every single street.

Plus: festivals, parades, salsa beats, and enough fireworks to make your dog hate you.

🗞 THE LOCAL SCOOP

Falls Flights, City Runs & a Lost Home

🏚 Heritage Home to Come Down in Port Colborne

More than a century old, the blue house at 63 Welland Street has a demolition date. City staff noted that few original architectural or heritage features remain, and council has now signed off on tearing it down. A reminder that not all “heritage” homes get a fairytale ending.

🎢 Niagara Falls Takes Flight

There’s a new way to see the Falls - without getting wet. “Niagara Takes Flight”, a $25-million flying theatre at Table Rock, officially opened this week. Riders buckle into gondola-style seats, swoop over the Horseshoe Falls on a domed 180° screen, and even feel the mist. Bonus: narration by Niagara’s own James Cameron.

Admission: $29 adults / $19 kids.

👟 Running Every Street in St. Catharines

Forget “couch to 5K” - 19-year-old Kai Janzen is running every single street in the Garden City. He started in April, maps each route by hand, and aims to finish nearly 700 km by November (closer to 1,700 km when you count the back-and-forth). Along the way, he’s tallying Free Little Libraries, quirky street names, and the parks most of us drive right past. One man’s fitness goal = our new favourite city tour.

🍽 THIS ONE’S WORTH THE CALORIES

The Venison at AG Inspired Cuisine

📍 5195 Magdalen Ave, Niagara Falls

When locals whisper about “life-altering” meals, they’re usually talking about the venison at AG Inspired Cuisine. Tucked under the Sterling Inn, this farm-to-table spot takes Niagara’s best ingredients and turns them into a plate that makes you forget every steak you’ve ever had.

Perfectly cooked, artfully paired, and just dramatic enough to feel like a secret worth sharing. It’s the definition of calories well spent.

Venison bolognese - proof AG makes game as soulful as it is elegant.

🏪 LOCAL BIZ TO LOVE

Niagara’s First Indoor Dog Park

📍 Market Hall, 5943 Sylvia Pl, Niagara Falls

Because fetch doesn’t end when summer does. Niagara’s first indoor dog park just opened its second location - giving pups (and their people) a climate-proof place to run, play, and learn. Programs & playgroups run Wednesdays by size (tiny, small, large), plus monthly passes include access to agility leagues, training guides, and even special events like “Howlin’ Howlween.”

Micro-facts:

  • Price: $65 monthly pass (includes weekly playgroups + perks)

  • Wait: Walk-in friendly; weekly schedule posted

  • Order ahead: Recommended for programs/playgroups

  • Parking: Free lot at Market Hall

  • Best for: Rainy-day zoomies, social pups, and humans who like tired dogs

🚧 DETOURS & DEVELOPMENTS

Fresh pavement, fresh patience

⚠️ Prince Charles Drive Slow-Down
Heads up if you’re near Fitch St. School: a stretch of Prince Charles Drive has dropped to 40 km/hr. The zone’s plastered with NEW signs, plus “SCHOOL AHEAD” painted right on the asphalt - no excuses. Bonus: the school’s driveway/lot now enter from Prince Charles.

🛠 Welland Roadwork Season Continues
The city’s annual resurfacing program is rolling out, with culvert replacements, asphalt milling, and paving on the list. Expect single-lane closures and delays here:

  • Division Street (RR 527) from Hellems Ave. → Burger St.

  • East Main Street (RR 27) at Division & Ross.

Plan your detours (or patience) accordingly.

🌦 LITTLE RANT

Pick a season, Niagara. Any season.

Last week I was melting into my patio chair at 35°C, plotting my escape to a freezer aisle. This week I’m reaching for a sweater before my morning coffee, because apparently it’s now 10°C at sunrise.

Where did summer go? Who gave fall the green light? And can someone tell my tomato plants what to do? They’re just as confused as the rest of us.

At this rate, I’m keeping flip-flops and a parka by the front door.

👉 What’s your favourite Niagara weather whiplash story? Hit reply - misery (and laughs) love company.

That’s it for this week.

If you’ve made it this far, you’ve got salsa beats, parade floats, and Niagara’s four-season shuffle - all crammed into one long weekend.

📤 Forward this to someone who swears Niagara gets quiet after August.

Until next Thursday,
