NEWSLETTER ISSUE #001
You didn’t hear this from us…
We’ve officially hit that part of summer - when fireboats become restaurants, Queen Street drowns in peaches, and Ship Happens (pun very much intended).
Between mystery defecators at the St. Catharines library (yes, really), a fireboat-turned-ferry-turned-bar-and-grill in Port Dalhousie, and civic chaos served with a side of peach pie, it’s clear: if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry.
Or worse - step in it.
Stay alert, stay hydrated, and for heaven’s sake… know where the public washrooms are.
🗞 THE LOCAL SCOOP
Cookies, chaos & one very busy fireboat
🧻 Public washroom crisis is… very real
A newcomer in a St. Catharines Facebook group asked:
“Where do people go when they really need to go?”
After witnessing someone openly defecating outside the library, the post drew 48 comments and a unanimous call for better public washroom maps. Honestly, fair.

When one library visit turns into a full-blown civic emergency:
🚽 48 comments later, the people of St. Catharines just want to know -
Where do you go when you gotta go?
🚢 Ship Happens opens in Port Dalhousie
The Normac - a Detroit fireboat turned Georgian Bay ferry turned floating eatery - has officially docked in Port Dalhousie as Ship Happens Bar & Grill. Wings, wraps, and waterfront views await.
No website yet (that we could find), just word-of-mouth and a Facebook frenzy.

🚧 Peach Fest = Road Closures
Heads up: Queen and King Streets in Niagara‑on‑the‑Lake will be closed Aug 8–11 for the Peach Festival and Shades of Summer. Expect detours, linen outfits, and enough peach pie to make your dentist nervous.

🫣 WE HAVE TO ASK…
📊 We’ll share your very public washroom stats in the next week’s edition - anonymously, of course.

🛍️ LOCAL BIZ TO LOVE
Boxed Cookies & Co.
📍 St. Catharines (Delivery & Pickup Available)
If childhood dreams came in a box, they’d taste like this.

Boxed Cookies & Co. turns your nostalgic snack cravings into giant, gooey, limited-edition cookies - think Birthday Cake Oreo, Wildberry Poptart, and Marshmallow M&M.
Flavours rotate weekly and sell out fast - locals line up (online) for the latest drop. Want in? Follow them on Instagram for menu updates and flash sales.

🍽 THIS ONE’S WORTH THE CALORIES
The Valley Restaurant
📍 93 Arthur St., St. Catharines

If your Nonna ran a neighbourhood trattoria with a wine list, it’d look a lot like this.
Tucked into the west end since ~1963, The Valley serves up scratch-made Italian comfort: pillowy gnocchi, veal parm the size of your face, and a red sauce so rich it deserves its own inheritance.
Locals swear by the shrimp linguine - buttery, garlicky, and just spicy enough to make you order another glass of wine.
No frills, no fuss - just old-school food that never went out of style.

🚧 DETOURS & DEVELOPMENTS
Where to avoid…
Unless you’re on foot with gelato
🛑 Queen Street (King → Victoria)
📅 Closed Aug 8–10 for Peach Festival
🛑 King Street (Queen → Regent)
📅 Closed Aug 10–11 for Shades of Summer
Fire routes stay open - but your backroad detour through NOTL just turned into a very slow parade. Park once, walk lots, eat peaches.

🐾 YOUR FUTURE BEST FRIEND
Beetlejuice
Say his name three times and he might just zoom into your heart.
This two-and-a-half-year-old Alaskan Husky came in scrappy and skinny - now he’s a total showstopper with Hollywood eyes and off-the-charts charm.
📍 Niagara Falls Shelter

He’s been waiting a while for the right human, and we get it: high energy, high drama, high cuddle potential.
Loves: long walks, dramatic entrances, chasing shadows, and probably your couch.

🥕 FRESH PICKED
DeVries Farms – Fenwick
Carrot supremacy, full stop.
These are Niagara’s sweetest, crunchiest, most brag-worthy carrots - grown in Fenwick, pulled fresh, and stacked like orange gold at the farm stand.
Dip them in hummus, roast them in butter, or eat one raw in the parking lot. (We won’t judge.)
The stand’s open year-round - but August? That’s peak carrot season.

🍷 SIP OF THE MONTH
The mystery of Archives Wine & Spirits (St. Catharines)
Walk through their door (if you can), and you’ll find a cozy space, passionate staff, and pours of Canadian wine you won’t see at the LCBO. Locals rave about the charcuterie boards, the tucked-away vibe, and service that makes you feel like you’ve joined a secret club.
The problem? The Niagara location on James St. is still a mystery - at least to me. Reviews say “amazing,” Instagram says “open Wed–Sun,” but Google still has it marked ‘temporarily closed.’
Toronto’s sipping happily, but here? We just want our hidden gem back.
🍷 Been lately? Hit reply and spill the wine.

😶 MY LOCAL RANT
Roundabouts...
My least favourite game is “Guess Your Exit.”
Some folks treat it like a NASCAR loop. Others test their brakes like it’s a trust fall.
And the rest of us? Just trying not to get t-boned on the way to Timmies.
Gentle reminder:
⛔ Left lane ≠ shortcut to the right exit
📢 Signaling ≠ optional
🧭 Merging ≠ mythical
You’re not stuck in traffic. You’re the reason your uncle keeps yelling “this is why I don’t go to the Falls.”
🚦 Got a worse intersection? Hit reply - we’ll rant with you.

That’s it for this week.
That’s a wrap on our very first Grapevine.
Next week? We’re spilling one of Niagara’s best-kept foodie secrets - the kind you’ll want to guard with your life. Or maybe you’re already in on it… it’s kinda going viral.
