📰 NEWSLETTER ISSUE #005
September rolled in throwing curveballs…
…from a summer hot spot fenced off, to cardboard chaos on the water. Add a new attraction lighting up the Falls, and you’ve got a week.
And yes - one burger that locals can’t stop talking about.
Good morning, neighbour!
Here’s what’s buzzing around Niagara this week:
A beach trading sand for scaffolding.
A race held together by duct tape and dreams.
A “zoo” where the wild things glow, not growl.
Alright, let’s uncork this week’s stories…

🗞 THE LOCAL SCOOP
Beaches, Boats & Beams of Light
🚧 Sunset Beach shut down for a glow-up.
Pack up the towels, Port Weller — Sunset Beach is officially off-limits. The city’s dropping nearly $7M on a makeover: bigger playground, new trails, shade huts, shoreline protection, even a rebuilt boat ramp.
Locals can’t even sneak in a dog walk; it’s a full construction zone until late spring. Mark your calendars though the plan is to reopen in time for Canada Day 2026 with everything shiny and new.
🛶 Port Colborne proved cardboard really can float… sometimes.
Remember those duct-taped dreams we told you about? Well, they hit the water at Sugarloaf Marina. It was glorious chaos. Twenty-five cardboard “boats” raced, sank, or both, cheered on by a few hundred spectators. Some barely left the launch, others limped in half-submerged, and one soggy duo proudly declared, “It’s a submarine now.”
Organizers say it’s one of the most fun events they’ve ever run and yes, it’s already locked to return next summer, bigger and splashier.

🦁 Lions, dinos, and koalas all holograms.
Move over wax museums, Niagara Falls just got a Hologram Zoo. Opened in June, it swaps cages for laser light. Walk beside life-size elephants, stare down lions, or wander with dinosaurs — all cruelty-free.
Families are calling it “wild” in every sense, and with tourists already lining up, expect it to be one of the Falls’ must-do add-ons alongside the Maid of the Mist. Perfect rainy-day plan for the kids, too.

🍽️ THIS ONE’S WORTH THE CALORIES
The WTF Burger at We The Finest (Niagara Falls)
Not all burgers are created equal. This one’s got the cult following to prove it.
The WTF Burger starts with daily-smashed AAA brisket and chuck patties, stacks on house-made pickles and sauces, and seals the deal with a sticky-sweet bacon onion jam.
Locals swear it’s “jam-packed” flavour in every bite - the kind of messy, brag-worthy burger you’ll be plotting a second visit for before you even finish the first.

Two smashed patties, cheddar melt, and a bacon-onion jam that’ll haunt your dreams.

📸 THROWBACK THURSDAY
The Day the Falls Went Silent (1969)
For six surreal months in 1969, engineers literally turned off Niagara’s American Falls. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers diverted the river to study erosion, leaving behind bare rock and a trickle of water.
Tourists came to gawk at the exposed cliff face, and locals still call it one of the strangest sights they’ve ever seen - Niagara without its roar. (Yes, you could actually walk on the riverbed.)

🌞 LITTLE JOYS
🍑 From Peaches to Pumpkin Spice
The sweet spot between seasons.
September in Niagara is a funny kind of magic. The grill still smells like Ribfest, but the first cider donuts are already sneaking onto café counters. Markets overflow with peaches and corn, while shelves pile high with pumpkin spice. One neighbour’s hanging harvest wreaths, another’s still running the sprinkler.
It’s messy, sure, but it’s also the only time you can eat peach pie on a patio while daydreaming about apple crumble. For a couple of weeks, we get to taste both.

That’s it for this week.
